About this event

Bare Bones is part of the programme at the Roman Army Museum in Greenhead, Northumberland. History meets Halloween: a hands-on look at the Vindolanda Trust's collection of animal bones, and what they tell us about the communities stationed along Hadrian's Wall 2,000 years ago.

What to expect:

  • 24 October to 1 November 2026, 11am to 3pm each day, over October half term
  • A family friendly-event and free to Roman Army Museum ticket holders
  • Handle objects from the Trust's animal bone collection with the museum team
  • Needles, hairpins and dice were often made from animal bone - see what they say about life on the frontier
  • Bones also show what the soldiers were eating and how they spent their leisure time
  • Drop in during the session; no separate booking for the activity
  • The museum is wheelchair accessible and welcomes guide dogs
