Ghost Ship in the Fog

Ghost Ship in the Fog is part of the October half-term programme at Royal Navy Museums: Hartlepool. What looks like a ghost ship in the mist might not be a legend at all! Families become Maritime Myth Busters, exploring how light, fog, shadows and optical illusions could have inspired mysterious stories once told by sailors at sea.

What to expect:

• Tuesday 27 October 2026, 10am to 4pm
• Use torches, transparent materials and a simple fog chamber to see how light behaves in mist
• Experiment with model ships, silhouettes and coloured filters to create eerie effects
• Challenge: make your model ship look like a ghost ship emerging from the fog
• Learn how fog scatters light and how shadows can appear larger than they really are
