Holiday workshops: Extract your own DNA (Year 3 and 4) is part of the Holiday workshops programme at the Royal Institution in London.

After harvesting their own cheek cells, students extract their DNA using lysis buffer, protease and ethanol - and go home with a piece of their own DNA in a necklace.

What to expect:

• Wednesday 28 October 2026, 10:30 to 12:30
• Takes place in the Urenco Young Scientist Centre's teaching laboratory, so participants work in a real lab environment
• For safety, all participants must wear closed-toe shoes and anyone with long hair must tie it back
• The Ri's own warning on the page: students will extract their own DNA from their saliva
• For children in the school year group named in the title; the Ri says this "typically corresponds to children aged around 7–9 years old", and it reserves the right to refund or deny entry to those outside it
