Tanker Train Day

Tanker Train Days are part of the programme at the Dean Forest Railway in Lydney, Gloucestershire.

The Forest of Dean lines were built for freight, and as the railway puts it, one of the best ways to experience how the DFR really would have been back in the day is to ride on a freight train.

What to expect:

• Sunday 18 October 2026, the last tanker train day of the year; booked traction is resident Class 09 09106
• You ride in the Queen Mary brake van, at the north end behind a heritage diesel loco, so you hear it working up gradients as steep as 1 in 135 to Parkend
• Run in association with the National Wagon Preservation Group, with a rake of TTA tankers
• You share the open veranda with the guard, who will explain how freight wagons are worked
• "This experience is only available for ages 12 and above"
• £18 Adult (18+), £9 Child (12-17); advance booking recommended
• No accessible access onto the brake van, you will typically be standing throughout, and dogs cannot travel
