Explore a stunning restored glen featuring spectacular waterfalls, scenic walking trails, and panoramic views across the River Clyde and beyond.
Auchmountain Glen is a place of outstanding natural beauty linking the Strone area of Greenock to the Whinhill reservoir. The glen features the dramatic Cartsburn descending 300 feet through a series of spectacular waterfalls. Originally developed in 1887 by local unemployed men (known as the 'Glen Boys') who created pathways, stairways, and bridges across the cascading water, the glen became a major local attraction and cultural inspiration in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. After decades of deterioration, a dedicated community restoration project beginning in 2013 has transformed Auchmountain Glen back to its former glory. The glen has been recognized in the Scottish Walking Awards as 'The Most Improved Walking Place' in Scotland. The main walking route starts from the iconic 'Monarch of Auchmountain Glen' sculpture and follows a well-reconstructed path through the 'fairy glen', ascending 15 staircases and crossing 8 bridges while showcasing the natural beauty of the waterfalls. The venue is suitable for families of all ages seeking outdoor nature experiences. The route can be taken at a leisurely pace to enjoy the natural surroundings, and extensions to the walk lead to the Whinhill Reservoir and the Whinhill Trig Point, which offers fantastic panoramic views across to Ben Lomond, the Gare Loch, and the River Clyde. Free entry and pushchair-friendly facilities make it an accessible destination for families wanting to experience restored natural heritage and spectacular Scottish scenery.
