Explore railway heritage through restored locomotives, miniature train rides, interactive exhibits, and a fascinating train driving simulator on the historic Buchan Line.
Maud Railway Museum celebrates the rich heritage of the Formartine and Buchan Way railway line through immersive exhibits and hands-on experiences. Visitors can ride the miniature railway operating in the Fraserburgh trackbed, pulled by a scale model blue English Electric class 20 diesel engine capable of accommodating up to 16 passengers. The museum features the Rails and Tales Visual Studio showcasing historical photographs and videos, an impressive 00-gauge digital model of Maud Junction with multiple operating trains, and an extensive collection of railway lamps displayed in the relocated Lamp Room. Interactive attractions include a war-time air raid experience with atmospheric sound effects—particularly popular with school groups—and a newly implemented train driving simulator where visitors can operate trains on the authentic Buchan Line route. The museum site displays authentic railway artifacts including a wagon turntable from the Consolidated Pneumatic Toolworks and ongoing restoration projects such as the Gunpowder Van. Open seasonally from April to September on second and fourth weekends, with volunteer availability most Wednesdays and Saturdays year-round. The venue is fully accessible with toilet facilities, baby changing facilities, and welcomes families with children of all ages. Dog-friendly grounds allow visitors to combine their museum visit with walks or cycling along the nearby Formartine and Buchan Way.
