Explore 54.5 hectares of scenic woodland in the Bathgate Hills with footpaths leading to a Bronze Age cairn summit and diverse wildlife habitats.
Ravencraig Woodland is an extensive 54.5-hectare amenity woodland site situated in the scenic Bathgate Hills, just a couple of miles from Bathgate town centre. The site features a network of footpaths across a largely natural, hilly environment, with both surfaced paths near the entrance and unsurfaced trails leading deeper into the woodland. Visitors can explore a small pond near the entrance, grassland areas offering wide vistas of the region, and coniferous woodland to the north. The highlight for many visitors is the ancient Raven Craig cairn, a Bronze Age monument classified by Historic Scotland and located amongst the highest points in West Lothian. The summit provides impressive views across the region, including sightings of the Firth of Forth to the north east and the Pentland Hills to the south. The site also features the remnants of its rich history, including old stone walls and ditches from when it was a deer park (1750-1805) and ruins of a farm steading. Ravencraig's diverse mixed woodland habitat supports abundant wildlife, including mammals such as badgers, foxes and stoats, birds of prey like buzzards and sparrowhawks, and aquatic creatures including dragonflies and damselflies. The woodland comprises both coniferous species (Scots Pine, Larch, Spruce) in the north and deciduous broadleaved trees (Oak, Alder, Horse Chestnut) to the south. The site offers free parking, waymarked footpaths of varying difficulty, and is suitable for families seeking outdoor exploration, though visitors should note there are minimal formal facilities with no onsite toilets or refreshments. The nearest amenities are in Bathgate town centre.
