Explore a remote Scottish loch sanctuary for rare Slavonian Grebes and Red-throated Divers among woodland and heather-covered hills.

Loch Ruthven is a picturesque nature reserve nestled in the Scottish Highlands, surrounded by birch woodlands and heather-clad hills. The reserve is renowned as a breeding ground for rare Slavonian Grebes and Red-throated Divers, which can be observed from dedicated hides throughout the site. Visitors are encouraged to visit in early spring (April onwards) when the Slavonian Grebes display their striking red and golden plumage, offering exceptional opportunities to witness courting pairs and nest-building behaviour among the sedge beds. The reserve supports diverse wildlife habitats, with woodlands and moorlands home to various bird species including Willow Warblers, Long-tailed Tits, and Tree Pipits. The landscape features distinctive glacial boulders and abundant lichens and fungi throughout the woodland. Families can enjoy peaceful walks along hide paths while learning about the reserve's conservation efforts to protect Schedule 1 protected species. RSPB Scotland actively manages the reserve to maintain ideal conditions for breeding birds, including monitoring grebe populations and managing sedge beds for nesting. To protect wildlife, swimming, paddleboarding, and canoeing are restricted from March to August. The site offers free entry and is suitable for visitors of all ages interested in wildlife observation and natural history.
