Explore dramatic coastal cliffs hosting over 115,000 breeding seabirds in spring and summer, Scotland's largest mainland seabird colony.
Fowlsheugh is a spectacular nature reserve featuring dramatic 30-metre sea cliffs that form Scotland's largest mainland seabird colony on the east coast. During spring and summer months (May to early August), the cliffs come alive with over 115,000 breeding seabirds including Guillemots, Razorbills, Kittiwakes, Puffins, and Fulmars. Visitors may also spot Grey Seals and dolphins in the waters below. The reserve offers a scenic coastal walk running approximately three kilometres along the grassland cliff-top, suitable for families year-round. A small shelter at the trail's end overlooks the breeding ledges, providing excellent viewing opportunities. The site is part of a designated Special Protection Area (SPA) and two Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs), highlighting its importance for wildlife conservation. While the seabird experience is most dramatic during breeding season, Fowlsheugh provides a rewarding outdoor experience throughout the year, with autumn and winter offering views of choppy seas and dramatic coastal scenery. The one-mile main trail features uneven, unsurfaced terrain with two flights of steps, making it suitable for families with older children and those comfortable with natural walking surfaces. The reserve is dog-friendly, welcoming families seeking outdoor nature experiences without admission charges.
