Discover Windermere's transformational gateway project connecting sustainable transport, natural landscapes, and community access to the Lake District World Heritage Site.

Windermere Gateway is an ambitious regeneration partnership project designed to create a world-class welcome for residents and visitors arriving in Windermere. Led by Westmorland & Furness Council in collaboration with the Lake District National Park Authority, Network Rail, the National Trust, and Urban Splash, this transformational initiative focuses on enhancing the natural gateway to the Lake District World Heritage Site while respecting its outstanding landscape and natural beauty. The project encompasses multiple interconnected improvements including a redeveloped station and transport hub, sustainable transport connections, and improved cycling and walking networks. A key component involves the Orrest Head Farm housing development, which aims to deliver affordable, locally-focused homes alongside employment opportunities. The scheme prioritises environmental sensitivity and design excellence, with careful highway and transport assessments ensuring that infrastructure improvements align with the area's world-class landscape. Visitors and residents benefit from enhanced sustainable travel opportunities, including improved connections to walking and cycling networks that link housing areas to the station, bus stops, and the Sustrans national cycle network. The initiative addresses existing traffic challenges through thoughtful engineering solutions and junction improvements along the A591, designed to support growth while maintaining the character of Windermere and its surrounding natural environment. Windermere Gateway is ideal for families seeking to explore the Lake District, offering improved access and connectivity to one of England's most spectacular natural destinations.

Windermere Lake is one of the most beautiful and peaceful destinations in England's Lake District. Surrounded by rolling hills, charming villages, and lush greenery, it offers stunning scenery in every season. A boat cruise on the lake provides breathtaking views and a relaxing experience. The walking trails around the area are well maintained and suitable for families as well as outdoor enthusiasts. The atmosphere is calm yet lively, with plenty of cafés, shops, and attractions nearby. Whether you're looking for nature, photography, boating, or simply a quiet escape, Windermere Lake is a destination that leaves lasting memories.

Beautiful scenery had some trouble finding parking because it was so busy, but makes sense because we went on bank holiday weekend.

Beautiful natural lake in the Lake District, one of the largest in England. A lovely place to spend a couple of days walking around and enjoying a boat cruise on the lake. Cruises operate right by the lake and tickets can be purchased on the day. There are different cruise options available, but the 45-minute cruise is perfect to get a good feel for the area. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here — so peaceful and surrounded by nature. Highly recommended at any time of year. I’ve visited in both summer and winter, and it’s stunning in every season. We stayed in Kendal and took the bus from the high street, which was a scenic route straight to Lake Windermere. Kendal itself is a beautiful town with a great mix of boutique and well-known shops.

Winter in Windermere was definitely worth the walk. It was like stepping into a postcard. The Lake District's beauty is amplified by snow-capped mountains, frosty mornings, & cosy firesides. The boat ride around the lake was tranquil, with mist rising off the water, creating a mystical atmosphere! Beatrix Potter's world comes alive here too! The village of Near Sawrey, with its quaint cottages & tea rooms were like stepping into the pages of her books. Definitely worth a visit.
