Family Workshop: Design your own uchikake

Design your own uchikake is one of the half-term family workshops at Japan House London in Kensington. Uchikake are a type of outer kimono worn on formal occasions in Japan, for example by brides on their wedding day. "Take inspiration from the plants and flowers of Japan to design your own uchikake."

What to expect:

• Wednesday 28 and Friday 30 October 2026, 14:30–16:30, in the Library
• Part of a series of free family-friendly drop-in workshops for the October half-term
• Drop in during the session; no age is stated, it is aimed at families
• Uchikake are usually heavily decorated with patterns often inspired by nature
• A sister workshop, origami rikishi and Tonton Sumo, runs on 25, 29 and 31 October
