About this event
The East Lancashire Railway runs a Santa Special designed for children and young people with SEND - the same journey, with the volume down, the flashing lights out of the grotto and a longer window to board.
What to expect:
- Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 November, Saturday 5 December and Tuesday 22 December 2026
- An 80-minute steam-hauled round trip from Bury Bolton Street to Rawtenstall
- "A quieter experience" - reduced music and visual stimuli, and characters who tone down their performances
- Calm Carriages can be booked; these have no live brass band
- Chaperoned outdoor access instead of the footbridge, and a wider arrival window so there is no rush to board
- Optional tools to tell the performers how much interaction you want
- An accessible coach takes 2 wheelchairs and 6 companions; registered carers travel free
- Santa visits every carriage with a gift for each child; children get a drink, chocolate and an activity pack
- A BSL interpreter can be booked on all four dates
