Descend underground with a former miner guide to experience authentic Welsh coal mining history at this award-winning heritage attraction in the Rhondda Valley.

Rhondda Heritage Park offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore the rich mining heritage of Wales through the Black Gold Experience, an underground guided tour led by former miners who worked in the Lewis Merthyr Colliery. Participants ride a simulated DRAM (coal tram) back to the surface while learning firsthand accounts of life in the mines. The venue features interactive digital displays and immersive exhibits that bring mining history to life, including recreated settings such as a coal mine owner's parlour and a traditional shop. The outdoor courtyard showcases original mining artefacts including coal drams, an Anderson bomb shelter, and the Old Forge where colliery blacksmiths once worked on pit horses. Suitable for families, school groups, and heritage enthusiasts, the park combines educational experiences with memorable storytelling. The on-site Caffe Bracchi provides refreshments, while a Welsh Gift Shop allows visitors to take home mementos. Group visits are available with customised itineraries, and the venue is quality-assured and award-winning, making it an excellent destination for anyone interested in understanding how Rhondda coal powered the world.

Great day out! Visited Trehafod for a family party and always wondered what it was like inside a place where many ancestors once worked. So booked and took my 7 year old nephew along for a look around. We was not disappointed. Former collier Pete took us the tour who was fantastic. Highly recommend anyone to do this if they can.

What a fantastic experience we had today!! Tour guide “tony” thank you, it was fun & factual. We be returning with other family members. With a simple question at the end truly blow my mind (I won’t ruin it for anyone else) but I still can’t believe it as I’m writing this!! But again thank you! It was clean, plenty of parking. Easy to get to. Cafe was lovely. Had a cheesecake and cheese on toast, stunning!

I came here today for the children's Easter event and it was absolutely worth it. The little one loved it We only paid £17 to get in an all the rides in there were free, free eater bunny headband, free eater egg, photos with the Easter funny and free petting area with a bunch of small animals. Really pleased with today most definitely be back.

Santa Toy Mine: visited today with my 4 year old and parents. It was a really lovely morning out. The decorations were beautiful plenty of lights and different scenes and there was even snow! The staff were very helpful and the elves were fantastic but the star of the show was Santa. He was so lovely with all the children (you visit in groups but get individual time with him too). The children were given a magical bell that turns into a toy in the toy shop (There were plenty of choices too!) Will definitely be booking this for next year!

Absolute gem of a place. The tour is great fun. Led today by Martin... personable as the Welsh are and deeply knowledge and passionate. The real life anecdotes and facts intertwined with humour made for a thoroughly enjoyable tour of a historic site. Me (30s), my mum (retired), 10 and 7 year old had a great time and found a fascination develop from our interactions today. Would highly recommend.
