Afan Forest Mountain Bike Trails

Port Talbot, United Kingdom•4.7(1k)•Country Park, Nature Reserve

Explore mountain bike trails ranging from beginner-friendly to expert, plus scenic walking routes through ancient woodlands and historic landmarks.

Afan Forest Park Visitor Centre serves as the primary gateway to one of Wales' most popular outdoor recreation destinations. The park features a comprehensive network of mountain bike trails graded for all skill levels, from the Rookie and Skills Park perfect for newcomers and families, to challenging routes for experienced riders. The skills park allows less experienced cyclists to develop their technical abilities in a supportive environment. Beyond cycling, the park offers waymarked walking trails catering to various fitness levels. Visitors can enjoy the easy Old Parish Road Walk following an ancient trackway, the moderate River and Railway Walk featuring a Brunel-designed railway tunnel, or the strenuous Gyfylchi Ridgetop Trail with panoramic valley views and historical points of interest including 18th-century chapel ruins. The visitor centre provides essential amenities including parking (with blue badge accessibility), toilets, and picnic areas throughout the park. Both trails are clearly marked with information panels at starting points. The facility is particularly well-suited for families seeking outdoor adventures, from young cyclists in the skills park to walkers of varying abilities exploring the forest's natural and historical heritage.

I used to come here a lot before COVID and before they did improvements works for better bike access. It is good drive up and is easily seen from the road. Cheap parking with plenty of spaces and a nice cafe. There are loads of walks you can do and it links up to a cycle path. Walking paths vary in length and difficulty. I do also enjoy cycling around here, great fun.

Slightly mature couple, we stayed in our van in Base Van Pitches, we were initially a bit worried about being so close to the road but we needn’t have worried it was very quiet overnight, the facilities were good, clean and the water was hot! Everyone was friendly. We rode Blue Scar a couple of times then Penhydd and can honestly say they were both great - I’m Not a skilled mtb rider but these trails gave me confidence - shame we were only here a couple of days as there’s so much exploring to be had - if you’re into walking or cycling this had to be on your list of places to go - beautiful Wales - thank you!

The blue mtb trail is lovely coming down! But it does feel a long climb to the top. The blue mtb loop takes 2 hours with a ten year old. Great scenery and little rushing waterfalls. Fantastic cafe at the bottom where you can get really delicious home made burgers and chicken wraps. My husband said the coffee was good. And recommends the spiced pumpkin cake too. There are also toilets, showers, bike wash, bike shop, and a museum about mining (check opening times as the museum is staffed by volunteers).

Had a great day riding the trails. Fantastic scenery climbs galore and rapid decents. Good coffee, the food looked good but didn't participate as we had our own. The guys in the bike shed were really friendly and extremely knowledgeable. Will definitely be back.. loved it!

Love this place - a great example of the great outdoors. Walked with grandchildren from the car park up to the the cafe. Oddly, no bike racks but a lovely cafe with great staff. Enjoyed drinks for all including a really good capachino. Good to catch up with a trustee from the South Wales Miners. Good day had by all.
