Great place for a visit. I spent about 4 hours there. Theres a short train ride. On the day I went this was using a 75 year old diesel and the driver invited me to visit the cab while at the station and explained the controls etc. Carriages were I guess from the 1960s with compartments (I had one to myself) and windows you can open snd lean out of. Museum, model railway and engine sheds to explore and lovely gardens. Friendly chatty staff. I got there using the mainline train to Alnmouth Station. From there its a pretty 50 minute walk to the railway, half the distance alongside the Aln Valley railway line itself. Just follow the bike path signs to Alnwick from the mainline station or see map that is available online (Northumberland Estates, Lesbury Walks)
This is a lovely, friendly little railway with some big ambitions. Currently, it's about a mile and a half long, but over the next few years they hope to extend it to 3+ miles into Alnmouth Station. You can wander into the engine shed, holding 3 saddle tank and one pannier tank engine. The museum is really interesting, displaying not only many old artifacts of the railway, but several old photographs. The cafe is bright and clean and very reasonable. All in all, well worth a visit!
Wow! What a wonderful experience, from such friendly and welcoming volunteers who run this golden slice of history with such love. The whole operation oozes genuine passion and care for the steam railway. It is a very hands-on experience of being part of a charming, relaxed journey on vintage carriages pulled by a completely authentic chuff chuff loco - grubby coal smoke, steam, whistles, iron, etc. If you get the chance, do it! A real bucket list activity for the eight year old in you.
Lovely little railway experience and play park. We visited with our toddler and some family. The play park is great, excellent bacon sandwich and drinks, the model railway was really fun and you can go as many times in the day as you like. The main railway museum and tour was interesting and showed the history very well. There’s parking and toilets available easily. Each train ride costs per person but it’s worth it if you have an interest in the railway
Great morning or afternoon day out. Only a short trip but worth it if you can jump on a steam train. The kids park is small but nice. Reasonable and cheap cafe selling a range of simple sandwiches and bacon butties on the day we went. The miniature ride on railway is not worth it in our opinion. You go forward 100m and back to the start.
