Visiting Althorp Estate was a truly peaceful and memorable experience. One of the highlights for me was the wonderful collection of portraits in the main house, complemented by the beautifully preserved period furniture that gives each room a genuine sense of history and elegance. I was fascinated to learn that much of Althorp’s remarkable collection was built up over generations of the Spencer family. I was also fascinated to learn about the estate’s vast library, one of the great private collections in Britain. Together, the portraits and library bring centuries of the Spencer family’s history vividly to life. Because Althorp is still a working family home, it has a warmth and sense of life that you don’t always find in historic estates. It felt lived in rather than simply preserved, which made the visit all the more special. If you have the opportunity, I highly recommend taking the walk to St Mary’s Church. Plan for about an hour to enjoy the walk before heading to Althorp Estate. The fields of vibrant sunflowers and wildflowers along the way are absolutely breathtaking and make the walk even more special. I also found Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial to be incredibly serene. It was a beautiful place to pause, reflect, and simply enjoy the tranquil surroundings. Overall, Althorp is much more than a historic house—it’s a place of beauty, history, and quiet reflection. I left feeling refreshed and grateful for the experience. A special mention goes to the café. I was delighted to learn that the cakes are freshly made each day by the in-house kitchen. I tried the lemon drizzle cake, and it was absolutely delicious—the perfect treat to round off a wonderful visit.
We had a beautiful afternoon exploring the house and grounds and learning about the history of the family, told through the portraits, furnishing and other treasures on displayed. Staff were on hand to give insight into how the rooms are used today by family and friends, with lovely anecdotes about extending the dining tables and cleaning the chandeliers. We visit many stately homes, and the staff at Althorp stood out as approachable, knowledgeable and respectful. Princess Diana's memorial, tucked away beside the peaceful lake, left us still wishing for a different ending to her story.
Very interesting but surprised there wasn't an area within the house dedicated to Princess Diana any more. She seems to have been airbrushed out. There was nothing within the rooms about the history of the house or the Spencer family. Presumably you would have to buy the guide book for this information. Quite a lot of walking from the car park to the house, so probably not suitable for anyone in a wheelchair or children in pushchairs. Also, apart from the cafe there was nowhere to sit either inside or outside except near the lake. More signage would be helpful as we had to ask where the lake was.
I had a fabulous time here. Plenty of parking. The house and the garden are beautiful and peaceful. The gift shop and the cafe are okay. You can but various cakes, cold sandwiches and hot soup. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable.
I thoroughly recommend a visit to Althorp House. The grounds are very peaceful and tranquil with beautiful mature trees. You enter through the former stables now transformed into a cafe and gift shop; a lovely place for a coffee and snack. The house itself is magnificent, not overly ostentatious with an amazing art collection. The tour through the house is easily navigated and well laid out giving you a glimpse into the long history of the Spencer family. Not to be missed is a walk around the lake with the island where the dearly loved Princess Diana was laid to rest. It is very poignant and moving; a most fitting final rest place. And if you're lucky you may get a chance to meet Earl Spencer himself as I did at a book signing in the gift shop or wondering round the grounds. All in all ur was a great day out.
