Situated in the middle of a residential area next to a school is an site of a roman fort. I am surprised this place isn't busier for a Roman fort with free entry. What is mainly visible are the foundations but there are the reconstructions of the main gate, barracks and the commanding officer's house which brings to life what the fort would look like. Much better than just drawings. The only difference the museum lacks are the number of finds of other sites.

Nice place for a visit. Staff are lovely. Free entry but PLEASE make a donation or buy something to help keep it going. Quite interesting for all ages. Nice little stroll about for an hour or so on any day. You even learn something. Highly recommend and will return.

Always a great experience and an invaluable part of our local history. Since it's excavation this site has become such a jewel of the north east, with it's recreated gate house, commanders building, and visitor's centre to it's archaeology. There's a lot to see here in the way of artefacts etc and it definitely makes for a great day out. The staff are also fantastic here, highly recommended

Even way up in the north of England the Romans occupied the South Shields area. Building a fort to house soldiers and create a supply chain to try and defeat the Scots. But no dice there... This is a wonderful place for families to enjoy. There's a small museum and then signs for a self guided tour are very informative. Great for locals and tourists.
