Stroll riverside lawns beside the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, featuring historic monuments, a swan fountain, and scenic views of the River Avon.

Bancroft Gardens is a picturesque riverside park located on the banks of the River Avon in Stratford-upon-Avon, directly adjacent to the world-famous Royal Shakespeare Theatre. The gardens attract over a million visitors annually who come to enjoy its wide grass lawns, scenic waterside setting, and cultural heritage attractions. The gardens feature several notable monuments and attractions, including the magnificent Gower Memorial statue of Shakespeare surrounded by four characters from his plays (Hamlet, Lady Macbeth, Falstaff, and Prince Hal), representing the major themes of philosophy, tragedy, comedy, and history. Visitors can also admire the impressive Country Artists Fountain, created for the 800th anniversary of Stratford's charter and unveiled by the Queen in 1996, as well as a human sundial celebrating the Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service. Beyond its cultural significance, Bancroft Gardens is ideal for leisurely walks, picnics, and observation of narrowboats on the canal basin. The site features two fully accessible bridges, comfortable seating areas, and beautiful floral displays. The gardens occupy historic ground with roots dating back to medieval times when it served as common grazing land, later becoming part of the Stratford-to-Birmingham canal terminus established in 1816. This blend of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and accessible riverside setting makes it a perfect destination for families and visitors of all ages.

nice area with a lot of shakespeare themed statues... beautiful view of the river... like everywhere else here, pretty much packed with tourists, so I'd try very early or late unless you like weaving through crowds of blind cattle...

Bancroft Gardens is one of the most beautiful and relaxing places in Stratford-upon-Avon. Located alongside the River Avon, it offers stunning views, colourful flower displays, well-maintained green spaces and plenty of benches to sit and enjoy the atmosphere. The gardens are perfect for a peaceful walk, a family day out or simply watching the boats pass by on the river. There is always something to see, from swans and ducks to street performers and seasonal events. The location is ideal, with many of Stratford’s attractions just a short walk away. What I love most about Bancroft Gardens is the sense of calm it provides despite being in the heart of a busy tourist town. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning again, it remains a wonderful place to relax and appreciate the beauty of Stratford-upon-Avon. Highly recommended for visitors of all ages.

Lovely open space near the canals and locks of the River Avon. Basically right in there centre and it's very easy to wander in to without meaning to. Lots of ducks and geese around. There are boats with restaurants and shops inside, so grab an ice cream and sit on the grass.

Beautiful weather added to a super setting; river, gardens, walkways, and local entertainers. The guy riding a piano, singing and steering with his seat.... what a brilliantly novel idea.... and no doubt the tips were profitable! But he deserved every penny (pound)!
