Bancroft Mill Engine Museum

Barnoldswick, United Kingdom•4.8(122)•Heritage Site, Museum

Explore Lancashire's cotton weaving heritage through working steam engines, historic machinery, and interactive demonstrations at this volunteer-run industrial museum.

Bancroft Mill Engine Museum preserves the region's rich industrial past by maintaining and demonstrating a 600hp cross-compound steam engine built in 1920, alongside associated machinery and looms from the weaving industry. Visitors can experience the power and scale of these magnificent engines, particularly on Steaming Days when the equipment operates in action, accompanied by the authentic sounds and atmosphere of a working mill. The museum features two significant steam engines: the main Bancroft engine and the historic Bradley Engine, a Smith and Eastwood Tandem-Compound engine that was painstakingly rebuilt by volunteers over ten years. The site includes three operational looms, one of which produces souvenir tea-towels, plus an extensive collection of artifacts from the weaving industry that once provided major employment to the area. Original Lancashire and Cornish boilers are also on display. Perfect for families and engineering enthusiasts of all ages, the museum offers guided experiences by knowledgeable volunteers who are passionate about sharing the venue's history. With a Tea Room serving refreshments and a welcoming atmosphere, visitors of varying interests—from those fascinated by industrial heritage to young people curious about engineering—will find something engaging. The museum operates Steaming Days seasonally between March and November, with additional Saturday Open Days and special exhibitions throughout the year.
