Barling Magna Wildlife Reserve is a 12-acre nature sanctuary located in the village of Barling Magna, northeast of Southend-on-Sea. Once part of a defunct sewage farm, the reserve has been beautifully transformed by dedicated local volunteers into a hidden gem offering visitors a perfect retreat into nature. The site features diverse habitats with meandering paths that wind through tree-lined walks and open meadows, providing opportunities for visitors of all ages to connect with wildlife. The reserve offers several walking trails suitable for different fitness levels, from gentle strolls to more invigorating walks. Visitors can enjoy birdwatching from strategically placed hides and observation stations, spot insects and small mammals in the wildflower meadows, or relax by the pond and observe aquatic life. Key features include the restored Trumpions Barn, a copse of Silver Birch and Rowan trees with spring flowers, wooden bridges, picnic benches, and various vantage points throughout the reserve. Families will appreciate the accessible facilities including free parking, picnic areas dotted around the grounds, and dog-friendly amenities with free waste bags available. The main path from the car park to Trumpions Barn is wheelchair accessible though may be bumpy in places, with remaining pathways being grass-cut. The reserve is open daily from 9am to 6pm (or dusk depending on season), and group visits for schools, cubs, guides, and nature enthusiasts can be organised with guides and activities available upon request.

This is a lovely nature reserve for a bit of time in nature. It's not huge but there are always birds to watch on the bird feeders and it's a nice walk around reserve. It is popular with dog walkers so there can be some off lead. There is also a public footpath opposite the entrance that goes through the fields.

Great place for bird watching/photography, loads of different types of birds including woodpeckers and pheasants. Also there are multiple bird feeders which are always covered in various types of small birds

Nice hidden treasure we discovered, despite being in the area for nearly 20 years. Good walk,but didn't see any adders.

It's a relatively small park excellently managed by volunteers beside the River Roach. There are a ujmber of short and interesting trails around the park leading to pond at the far end. Plenty of wild life and varied fauna to see. Opens at 9am and closes at 6pm or dusk, whichever is earlier. Has car park.

Lovely reserve, car parking for approximately 12 cars, idyllic spot for a family picnic. If you want a walk then it's too small, but you can walk out of the car park and head down to the sea wall which will fulfil all your walking needs.
