Barton Hills NNR

Barton-le-Clay, United Kingdom•4.8(1.1k)•Country Park, Nature Reserve

Explore chalk grassland and beech woodland rich with wild flowers, butterflies and wildlife on accessible footpaths throughout this North Chilterns nature reserve.

Barton Hills National Nature Reserve is a stunning example of downland and woodland habitat in the North Chilterns, offering families and wildlife enthusiasts an accessible outdoor destination for exploration and learning. The reserve features lowland chalk grassland and beech woodland, with the entire site open to the public via a network of footpaths. Visitors can discover a rich variety of flora and fauna throughout the seasons. The chalk grassland showcases colourful wild flowers including rarities such as Pasque flowers, greater pignut and field fleawort, alongside classic downland plants like marjoram, rock rose and scabious. During summer months, the reserve becomes a haven for butterflies including chalkhill blue, marbled white and dark green fritillary. The woodland sections contain an important population of large-leaved lime trees and the scarce plant herb paris, while mammals such as stoats, weasels and hares can be spotted by observant visitors. Barton Hills is particularly popular with families, walkers and wildlife enthusiasts seeking free outdoor recreation in a natural setting. While the terrain is steep and challenging in places, making it mostly unsuitable for wheelchairs, certain paths such as the route alongside the stream from the hay meadow can offer wheelchair-accessible options depending on weather conditions. The reserve is easily accessible via local bus services (number 81 from Luton) and footpath access points near Barton-le-Clay.

Such a beautiful little town with rich nature and some of my favourite animals as horses. I have made it all the way to visit and was so lucky to see them. They are beautiful (Although, I hope there is someone who takes care of them as some didn't look well). The area is beautiful, especially when you reach the top of the hills - the view is stunning. Besides, very friendly and helpful people in town and while hiking. Recommend

Great place to walk to with lots of beautiful views if you take the long way around. The Springs are actually easily accessible from a footpath from the local play park but it was great to visit via the bridleway although it is mainly uphill before crossing over the top field using the footpath and crossing along the ridges and then taking the path down.

One of my favourite places in the world. The way the atmosphere changes as you wander from woodland to spring and into rolling hills is something incredibly special. It can be busy by the water in the nice weather, particularly in the school holidays, but if you can catch quieter times you will hear an incredible variety of birds and really experience the atmospherics of the place. I love the fact there is no visitor centre and purpose built footpaths. It’s rare to be really in nature these days. I’m very greatful to everyone who works to maintain the area. Thank you!

I didn’t believe first that we can see horses in there. After a long walk I found a herd of horses. I was excited and anxious at the same time. But the horses are really friendly. I was watching them in long distance and they came to me. Barton hills is wonderful place for walk. Not crowded. Roadside parking available.

A wonderful hill surrounded by forest, right next to a small cemetery and a large park with a playground. Stunning views, beautiful grazing horses, and plenty of paths for walking and cycling.
