Unfortunately, visiting the underground premises was not possible. Otherwise great. If you want to go underground, phone first. Rather enoying that they charge GBP 5 for the parking. P.S. After having visited the National Mining Museum od Scotland ("Lady Vic") near Edindurgh, I had to downgrade the Pig Pit to generous 3*. Lady Vic offers much more, no parking fee, a great guide and a nicer coffee shop.

Great experience going down the pit. Very knowledgeable guide. Was able to take 87 year old father down as they have a wheel chair avaliable for this. Great interesting site with lots of development going on. Second visit, first one was 14 years ago, and it was good to see it changing. Recommended.

Ahh Big Pit, if you're a Welsh child growing up this is basically like your initiation to prove you're actually Welsh, I've been several times over the years but this was by far the best visit. Our female tour guide (forgive me for not remembering your name!) was well educated and told us facts that I hadn't been told before on previous trips, really sold the experience and how challenging it was for miners during that period. Despite being underground, the corridors are rather spacious but occasionally with a low roof, so you never feel claustrophobic (except the lift). Brilliant guide who made the day a memorable experience! Had no idea also that you could visit the wheel house, I've never actually been inside before as all the warning signs outside make it seem as though you're not allowed. The café is pretty underwhelming for selections with a few sandwich, pasty options etc. but I imagine its too expensive to keep a kitchen open like it was years ago (sad times for Wales). Staff are always friendly and welcoming, the ticket machine is located next to the entrance so worth parking on the lower level closest to the building for those with disabilities/elderly. Big Pitt is a cornerstone of Wales and always worth a visit/supporting. Diolch Big Pitt!

Big pit coal museum is fascinating and very well presented with an amazing story behind it. It's great to see the old lockers with employees stories on them. Also the theatre experience which was split into sections was very informative and engaging. The shop was very well laid out with loads on offer and lovely staff. Unfortunately we didn't have long so had to rush and didn't get to go into the mine. Definitely want to return.

★★★★★ An Unforgettable Visit to Big Pit National Coal Museum What a fantastic day out from start to finish — we spent around 4 hours there and could easily have stayed longer! Tickets are very reasonably priced — you can explore the museum for free, and if you want the full underground experience it’s just £5pp if you pay on the day or £8pp if you book in advance. Parking is only £5, which is excellent value for such an immersive attraction. We booked the 10:30am underground tour but arrived early and were kindly offered spaces on the 10am tour instead. This worked out perfectly as there were only 8 of us in the cage, while our original time was fully booked — it felt much more personal. We were the first visitors there and were warmly welcomed by Emma, who was amazing — friendly, helpful, and extremely knowledgeable. She took us to the winding house and explained how everything worked, which really set the scene. Our underground guide, Mark, was outstanding. He had worked in a mine when he was younger, so he could truly relate to what he was talking about. His stories felt authentic because he had lived it to an extent. He had a great sense of humour, was very chatty, and happily answered all questions. The tour is meant to last around 50 minutes, but they do not rush you — we were fortunate to spend about 90 minutes underground! You’re kitted out with a helmet, headlight, and a belt containing a self-rescuer (emergency oxygen supply) — which is there in case of smoke or gas, allowing you to breathe safely while exiting. It really adds to the realism of the experience. Underground, you’ll learn about the trap doors, the roles of each worker, and see the ponies’ homes — with their original name plaques still in place. You walk deeper and lower into the mine, getting a true sense of conditions. The full timbered workings stretch for 27 miles, though visitors explore around 1–2 miles — more than enough to appreciate the scale. Important tip: Go to the main car park and enter through the gift shop. This is the best route as you’ll first visit “King Coal”, where you watch a short interactive video experience (around 10–15 minutes). Afterwards, head to Number 10, the museum area, which includes interactive displays, the showers, locker rooms, and a great overview of the history. There’s also a café on site. We brought our own food but bought drinks there — prices were reasonable (cappuccino £3.50, coffee £2.50). Toilets were incredibly clean as well. The gift shop sells a wide variety of items including sweets, oil lamps, coal souvenirs, stationery, and alcohol-themed gifts — all reasonably priced. Overall, it was a brilliant experience and a great family day out. I went with my partner, bonus daughter, and mother-in-law, and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. Highly recommend!
