We had so much fun exploring Birdoswald. From the moment we walked in, the woman at the front (sorry, I dont remember your name!) Was so welcoming and engaging with the kids. The interactive museum had my 6, 8 and 31 year old enthralled! The hunt for the spy was cool and my favorite part of the day! But I have to give the biggest shout out to the two ladies who were working on the 7th July, they came straight to my aid when I slipped and fractured my leg and I cannot thank them enough for how friendly and helpful they were! Side note - if youre going during rain, take extra care when walking 🤣🤣🤣

Having visited the amazing Vindolanda fort and museum yesterday, Birdoswald pales in comparison. The museum here contains only a handful of artifacts and is set up for elementary school children. Outside, little of the remains of the fort is exposed. Much of it was excavated and pilfered in Victorian times. The site consists of a series of dilapidated signs explaining what lies under the grassy field and challenging the kiddies to solve some puzzles and questions posed to them in the museum. I understand that some serious archeological work was done here and the site was then covered over for preservation - fair enough, but nothing even for the kiddies to see here, and no explanation for the adults. It was extremely disappointing.

Great exhibition around the ruins of the Roman Fort. You can ask yourself, if it’s worth to pay £12 to see a small museum and some ruins. In my opinion it is, since they explain the history of Hadrians Wall and invest into the upkeep.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit here! Sturdy comfortable shoes recommended (and if it’s been raining, ones that you don’t mind getting muddy!)

For people, who love ancient roman history. Just close your eyes, make a deep breath and imagine the life here seventeen centuries ago. There is a gift store. Wonderful place!
