Blackhall Rocks Beach

Blackhall Colliery, United Kingdom•4.7(167)•Beaches, Nature Reserve

Explore a dramatic Durham coastline featuring limestone cliffs, hidden caves, and wildflower meadows teeming with wildlife.

Blackhall Rocks Beach is a hidden gem on the Durham Heritage Coast, offering visitors a stunning natural landscape transformed from its industrial past. The beach features the largest cliff caves in Durham's magnesium limestone coastline, inviting exploration along the rocky shore. Towering cliffs showcase natural reef-limestone formations dating back 250 million years, creating a geological wonder for curious visitors. The site is a paradise for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts, boasting one of the highest densities of breeding skylarks in County Durham alongside merlins, short-eared owls, stonechats, kestrels and numerous seabirds. In summer, the cliff tops burst with colour as wildflower-rich grasslands reach their peak bloom in June and July, displaying cowslip, thrift, common rock-rose, birds-eye primrose and bloody cranesbill. These rare Magnesian Limestone grasslands are increasingly scarce across Britain. The reserve is also home to diverse wildlife including hares, voles, foxes, stoats, weasels and one of County Durham's largest toad populations. A scenic 5km circular coastal hike connects the beach with surrounding shoreline denes, making it ideal for families seeking outdoor adventure, education about coastal geology and ecology, and peaceful time in nature. Open year-round and dog-friendly, Blackhall Rocks Beach offers free access to this spectacular stretch of unspoilt coastline.

Amazing walk at the BlackHall Rock Beach with #TheGrandRisers #BlackHall #Hartlepool The Story Behind: Blackhall Rocks Beach, part of the stunning Durham Heritage Coast, is a highly recommended and tranquil escape that showcases a dramatic natural comeback. Once known for the industrial coal waste dumped by the Blackhall Colliery (famously featured in the film Get Carter), the coastline has undergone a massive environmental restoration. Today, visitors find a unique, rugged landscape of pebbles, stones, and sand, backed by imposing Magnesian Limestone cliffs. The sea caves and arches carved into the rock face are a breathtaking highlight, particularly at low tide when the extensive rock pools reveal returning sea life like anemones. Walkers are rewarded with stunning, ever-changing views of the North Sea. The area atop the cliffs, a Local Nature Reserve, is equally special. In summer, the rare Magnesian Limestone grassland bursts with wildflowers such as cowslip and rock-rose, making the cliff-top path an excellent spot for birdwatching and scenic walks. With free parking and a peaceful atmosphere, Blackhall Rocks is truly a hidden gem, offering history, dramatic geology, and a fantastic outdoor experience. Visitors must check the tide times due to the quick-rising water.

Wow,wow wow! Use the proper stairs and check tide times. Lovely caves, amazing how the sea batters away the rock, sand and cliffs. Free car park at the top, and fluffy calves 😍

Blackhall Rocks Beach is a gem! It was slightly crowded but still felt peaceful with fewer people. The highlight was spotting a seal🦭such a thrill! Perfect for a short, scenic walk.

First time here. Enjoyed it. Not much sand. Loads of rocks, and this is what makes it a stunning beach. Will definitely be going back.
