Even in the awful weather, easy to see how this beach has won so many awards! I thought about writing in the visitors book but was put off by the enormous fresh looking turd carefully placed right I would need to stand. Free parking, which is a right bonus!

This is one of the most beautiful beaches we've been to on Shetland. Nestled at the top of Yell about 20 minutes from the ferry terminal to Unst - you have to take a very windy road/farm track so need to take your time getting there. You park in a farm car park which has limited spaces and its a snug fit for larger vehicles - we had our Volkswagen Transporter and it was quite tight for space! Following parking up there is a walk to the beach which is not accessible for those in wheelchairs sadly as it involves going over fields and then down a VERY steep sandy embankment onto the shore front- its steep ebough theyve actually out ropes to hold on to! Having said all this, the beach itself is worth it if you can get there. We went July so it was warm (18-19ºc) and the kids were in the water absolutely fine for a good few hours in swim costumes/shorts. Plenty of soft, white sand to set up on, rocks for climbing and waves that the older kids loved (probably not high enough for surfing, but enough to emulate a wave-pool in a waterpark effect). Far and away the most amazing thing about this beach is the cleanliness and COLOUR of the water and fields around you. It is quite simply spectacular. It is very isolated so pack well with water and snacks as it's a drive to get to the nearest shop from here.
