British Camp Hill Fort

Colwall, United Kingdom•4.8(736)•Country Park, Heritage Site

Explore a 3,500-year-old Bronze Age hillfort with spectacular views across the Malvern Hills and centuries of fascinating history.

British Camp is one of the most distinctive landmarks in the Malvern Hills, standing at 338 metres above sea level and offering magnificent panoramic views across the surrounding landscape. The site is thought to have been the location of a significant Bronze Age hillfort dating back approximately 3,500 years, making it a fascinating destination for families interested in archaeology and ancient history. The hillfort underwent major expansion around 400 BC when the population of Britain grew rapidly. The site's distinctive ramparts, still clearly visible today, were originally constructed using antler picks and once featured multiple gateways strategically oriented to the east. Archaeological surveys, particularly those conducted by English Heritage in 2000, have uncovered evidence of numerous hut circles, suggesting British Camp was home to a substantial settlement of around 4,000 people rather than serving purely as a defensive structure. Beyond its prehistoric significance, British Camp also boasts medieval history. A Norman ringwork was built on the summit between the late 11th and 12th centuries, likely incorporating a wooden castle that may have served as a hunting lodge, military outpost, or symbol of power. The earthwork from this medieval construction shaped the hill's distinctive flat-topped appearance that visitors see today. Families can enjoy free access to this outdoor historical site year-round, with refreshment facilities available on-site. The location is dog-friendly, making it ideal for visitors exploring the site with their pets. Whether walking the accessible routes, learning about Bronze Age settlements, or simply taking in the stunning views, British Camp offers an engaging blend of outdoor recreation and historical discovery.

Amazing 360° views. Well worth the climb up - which wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. Went early on a very hot day, but was lovely and cool and breezy at the top. Peaceful & tranquil atmosphere. The car park is a little expensive if youre not staying al day, but it contributes to the cost of maintaining the landscape & there are free toilets nearby.

This is an absolutely beautiful part of the country and the number of walks is endless. Every steep section is worth the effort as the views are stunning. The car parks are expensive at £6.50 for the day but you can use the same ticket at other car parks in the area, so remember to keep your ticket if you plan to drive around.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to British Camp Fort, even though it was one of the warmest days in April. The walk itself ranged from moderate to challenging, depending on the distance one chose to cover. We would certainly consider returning for another visit. A delightful local pub is conveniently located across the road, offering delicious food and the added benefit of being dog-friendly. The only minor inconvenience was the parking situation, which was somewhat anticipated given the pleasant weather and the resulting crowds.

Great spot for a walk with some fantastic views. Bear in mind there are some steep climbs but there are steps in certain locations. Well worth it though. Longer routes if wanted too. Parking is available but it's a one off £6.50, although that is for all day. Nice pub/hotel over the road and a coffee shop.

What an absolutely lovely place to visit and to take a walk. I would highly recommend others to follow in our tracks 👣 😀. The carpark is £6 for the day and there is a fab cafe at the crossroads.
