A leisurely walk but surrounded by huge fells all around the lake. Beautiful views throughout.
It only takes about ten minutes to walk from the only parking lot to the lake. If you have good weather, you can definitely enjoy the scenery of a secret lake surrounded by mountains. If you stay on the trails around the lake, you can enjoy different waterfalls and waterfalls. The spectacular lake view is very relaxing. In addition, after walking for about 20 minutes, you can walk to the lake and feel the clear water of the lake up close. I personally think this is definitely one of the most worthwhile attractions in the entire lake area.
Pristine lake surrounded by magnificent mountains, with idyllic stony beaches along the shoreline. The circular walk around the lake is generally easy, with just one section on the eastern side presenting a small challenge, where the path heads through a dark rocky tunnel. The views are unbeatable all the way around the lake, particularly when the weather's calm and the mountains reflect perfectly in the water. Haystacks, Wainwright's favourite fell, provides a stunning backdrop at the southern end of the lake. At the northwest edge of the lake, an impressive cascade flows down the mountainside through woodland. A small wooden bridge provides easy access. Other small cascades tumbling over rocks characterise the west side of the trail, adding to the exquisite natural beauty. There's a small amount free roadside parking near the church of St James, and a National Trust parking area a short way north of the hotel. Buttermere is smaller than many of the Lake District's more famous lakes, but arguably the most beautiful, and one of the easiest to walk around.
Highly recommend doing the circular walk around the entire lake. There is an ice cream van halfway through the walk to keep you going :)). Parts of the walk are rocky, but can be completed easily in the correct shoes. Many beach areas for swimming access and not far from the carparks. Carpark in the village by the hotel was £9 for 24hrs. National trust carpark was around the corner, but gets full quick.
Bloody gorgeous lake and one of my favourite walks. Parking can be difficult in the holiday season so you’ll need to go early or catch the bus. Really worth the visit.
