Explore over 180 hectares of heathland, diverse wildlife, and scenic walking trails across one of southern England's largest commons.

Chailey Common is one of the largest commons in the south of England and has been a designated Local Nature Reserve since 1966. Stretching over 180 hectares (450 acres), the site comprises five distinct areas: Red House Common, Memorial Common, Romany Ridge Common, Pound Common, and Lane End. It's recognized as a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its exceptional heathland habitat and vibrant insect and bird communities. Visitors can experience diverse natural features throughout the seasons. The common is dominated by heathers with striking displays of blue Marsh Gentian, Bog Asphodel, Sundew, and Heath-Spotted Orchid. The habitat supports numerous bird species including Stonechat, Yellowhammer, Linnet, and summer visitors like Nightjar and Hobby. Native adders, common lizards, and various amphibians inhabit the site, while Hebridean sheep, Exmoor ponies, and cattle graze to maintain the landscape. The site welcomes families and outdoor enthusiasts of all ages with open access to footpaths, dog-friendly policies, and multiple car parks with facilities. Horse riding is permitted on designated areas. Free entry makes this an accessible destination for walking, cycling, and wildlife observation. The commons are managed for conservation under Natural England's Higher Level Stewardship scheme, ensuring protection of this unique natural environment.

Beautiful nature reserve with dozens of walking paths and trails. Great for walking the dog and to get exercise. Plenty of parking an bins for all waste. It can get very very wet so wear the correct footwear! Beautiful country spot.
