Cogglesford Watermill

Sleaford, United Kingdom•4.7(270)•Heritage Site, Museum

Explore England's only operating Sheriff's Watermill, a fully restored 1000-year-old working mill on the River Slea with interactive milling days and riverside refreshments.

Cogglesford Watermill is a historic working watermill situated in a picturesque setting by the River Slea, thought to be the only Sheriff's Watermill still operating in England. Millers have been producing flour on this site for over a thousand years, and following a council-funded restoration in 2021, visitors can now watch the restored waterwheel in action as traditional stone-ground flour is milled using historic machinery. Families can experience living history through monthly milling days (held on the second Sunday of each month) when the entire mill operates and staff demonstrate traditional flour-grinding techniques. Weekly wheel-turning sessions provide ongoing opportunities to see the machinery in action. For a more immersive experience, milling apprenticeship experiences allow visitors to be trained as millers and operate the machinery themselves under expert supervision, making it ideal for family outings or team-building activities. The venue features a gift shop selling locally sourced produce and stone-ground flour produced on-site, while refreshment areas offer hot drinks and cakes in winter or cold drinks and ice cream during summer months. Free guided history tours led by a local historian are available on the fourth Saturday of each month. The mill is fully dog-friendly with a dedicated canine entrance and comfortable seating area. Combined visits with nearby Navigation House provide deeper insights into the area's riverside industrial heritage. All ages are welcome, from young children through to adults interested in traditional craftsmanship and local history.

Great place lovely views and nice walk along the River Slea. Staff are excellent plus a lovely small cafe for drinks and biscuits. A car park as well if you don't feel like walking from town which is less than 1 mile. It's also free to get in and lots to see and guides are very good.

Myself and my Dad came to Cogglesford Mill today for the first time in a long time. We found a beautiful little spot outside and both had a coffee each. From the minute I walked through the door to the second that we left, the staff members were all lovely. Every single one of you were polite and informative and we couldn't fault the coffee from the new machine. Prices are very reasonable and their is about 20 parking bays on site aswell. Definitely will be back when next in town ☺️

Mike at Navigation House in Sleaford recommended we visit the Watermill and we weren't disappointed. It's lovely to see such investment in heritage sites, however it is the warmth, knowledge and enthusiasm of guides who bring a place to life. Absolutely brilliant greeting at the Mill, demonstration of the hoist, working machinery and watermill. With a verbal history of the mill and it's products and great information board, we truly felt the pulse of the mill. At the end we popped into the little shop and cafe and tried the lovely freshly baked biscuits. Which washed down perfectly with a hot drink. Wonderful staff, thank you for a great visit.
