Coldstones Cut

Bewerley, United Kingdom•4.7(754)•Heritage Site

Explore Yorkshire's most ambitious public sculpture integrated into Coldstones Quarry, offering free 24/7 access to an immersive art experience.

Coldstones Cut is a monumental public artwork by Andrew Sabin, uniquely designed as a sculptural response to Coldstones Quarry near Pateley Bridge. The sculpture is integrated directly into the walls of one of the UK's deepest quarries, creating an immersive experience that combines art, nature, and geology in a way unlike any other attraction. Visitors can explore the artwork at their own pace, enjoying both the physical experience of navigating the quarry landscape and the opportunity for contemplation. The Cut invites visitors to look inwards into the earth's crust while simultaneously offering outward views over the spectacular contours of the Nidderdale National Landscape. It's a destination that encourages reflection on fundamental existential questions about place and human presence. Admission is completely free and the site is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, making it accessible to families, artists, nature lovers, and curious explorers of all ages. The outdoor setting and free access make it an ideal addition to a Nidderdale visit, with pushchair-friendly access available and dog-friendly policies in place.

Brilliant free art insulation over looking a working quarry. Fantastic views all around. Would definitely recommend I did a 6 mile circular of the disused kilns in the area.

Amazing little place..short uphill walk from the free carpark. The sculpture is great fun and imposing at the same time and the views of the quarry are amazing! Loved my visit here.

A gem of a place hidden in plain sight. Crossed path with a local mountain leader but she had never heard of it despite having lived in Yorkshire Dales all her life. The monument and the quarry are made for each other and the surrounding views are stunning. If you are lucky you'd be able to spot some spectacular wildlife while walking up to the monument. The walk up is not very long but a but steep and plenty of dedicated free parking. You can donate to the monument/parking if you so wish.

The Coldstones Cut.. WHERE ART MEETS EARTH. BIGGEST AND HIGHEST PUBLIC ART WORK WITH 421M ABOVE SEA LEVEL! I recently visited The Coldstones Cut and found it to be a really unique and interesting place. It’s definitely worth a visit if you have an interest in geology, landscapes, or nature in general. The views and the structure itself make for a memorable experience. One of the highlights is how accessible and family-friendly it is. There’s a free car park, which makes planning the visit easy, and it’s great for both kids and pets. It’s a relaxed spot where you can take your time exploring and enjoying the surroundings. Overall, it’s a nice, peaceful destination that offers something a bit different from the usual outdoor attractions.

Parked up by the lime kiln and a short but steep walk up the hill. Interesting heritage / public art space. Gorgeous landscape views on the way up, with the sound of curlews in the spring. The views from within the installation are dramatic in a different way. An interesting idea and worth a visit.
