A unique rope-based adventure playground in wooded castle grounds, featuring three rope pyramids and interconnected climbing challenges.

This playground stands out dramatically from Edinburgh's typical offerings—it's constructed almost entirely from ropes. Three large rope pyramids serve as climbing frames at the corners, connected by an intricate maze of rope nets, ladders, bridges, monkey bars, and hammocks. Two traditional slides provide the only non-rope elements. Set within Craigmillar Castle Park's wooded grounds, the playground offers a genuine adventure atmosphere, with fairy doors to discover among the trees and proximity to the historic castle itself. Picnic tables dot the area. The rope-heavy design particularly appeals to children and teenagers who enjoy climbing challenges. A family favourite for those seeking something different.

The grounds surrounding Craigmillar Castle blend historical significance with community green space. The parkland includes wooded areas, open fields, and a former curling pond, all offering peaceful walking with views of the well-preserved medieval castle ruin—a less crowded alternative to Edinburgh Castle.

A lovely place for a walk. There’s a great playground for kids to climb, lots of blackberry bushes in summer for a quick treat, and the magnificent Craigmillar Castle ruins to wander around. A perfect spot to spend an hour or two outdoors.

Craigmillar Castle Park is ideal for small family walks with plenty of space to socially distance from others. There are a couple of beaches near the castle to stop for snacks. Paths around the park are good and bonus for us was the ropes playground for our eldest.
