Stunning Napoleonic fort, rich in history and kept alive but the Landmark Trust. A great place to visit for some culture or to stay in the ramparts if you’re after a cosy time away.

We stayed for a week through The Landmark Trust. What an amazing experience and week we all had. Excellently equipped. Fantastic surroundings. Being able to call a fort home and be able to explore for a week. Wow. Was a week that memories were made.

Closed to the public when I visited unfortunately. Looked really intriguing and would’ve liked seeing inside but apparently the residents have closed it until March 2024. There was a footpath around the outside but it was quite treacherous - slippery after rain and occasionally going right up to the edge of the moat(?) around the fort which is at least a 15 foot drop. There is a fence around the fort but no guardrail by the moat(?).

A truelly amazing experience. A great example of a Victorian fort. Amazing tunnels to explore with history to take you back to a bygone Era. We stayed for 3 nights and had the entire place to ourselves. Go to the landmark trust website for more info.

This early Victorian Fort, operated by the Landmark Trust, is well worth making an effort to visit. They have open days throughout the year, but it is not open on a daily basis. They have live firing of cannons and rifles (all using blanks of course). There are tunnels and rooms aplenty, and two barrack rooms are presented in the 1890's and 1940's style. There are toilets but no catering facilities as such. They even have volunteers who dress up in Victorian clothing. UPDATE: Since posting this, CF now have catering. These are usually outside suppliers who operate from purpose built vans.
