Nice, easily accessible ruin up a short hill from the car park. Wasn’t really intended as a fortress when built, but nonetheless was under siege by Roundheads during the English Civil War. The Royalists held out. Worth a stop if it doesn’t take you far off your route or you are in the area. You cannot go up the tower unless you contact EH & attend at certain times.
Historic Donnington Castle, standing proudly above the Berkshire countryside. The views from the hilltop were well worth the climb, and it was fascinating to stop and take in a place with such a rich history. Built in 1386, the castle is best known for surviving a long siege during the English Civil War, with its impressive gatehouse still standing today.
Lovely historic spot, within about a 30-40 minute walk from Newbury town centre. Lots of information boards dotted around the castle ruins, detailing the castle’s construction in the 14th century and its role in the English Civil War. There is a small car park at the bottom of the hill (a two to three minute walk to the castle). Unfortunately the inside of the gatehouse (the remaining part of the castle) is not regularly accessible although I understand that there are monthly tours, which I’d love to come back to join!
Definitely worth the climb. But definitely not for the disabled. The castle is well presented with several interesting information points. The view is incredible. Parking is great and close by.
A short distance from central Newbury are these castle ruins. The main attraction is the gatehouse which stands largely intact. English heritage look after the site and they have provided many information boards explaining the history and significance of the site which played a key role during the civil war.
