We visited the pools on the recommendation of a birdwatcher, but were hugely disappointed. The parking is easy and free (albeit fouled by dogs whose owners hadn't followed the code), but there were only two swans, a pair of lapwings, a dozen Canada geese, a dozen greylag geese, four herons, a few coots and lots of mallards and gulls, all of which we can see at home. No owls, which was unexpected after what we had been told. There were lots of swifts whizzing around, though, which was a lovely sight. The two bird hides were very poor (compared with the NWT reserve at Low Hauxley, just up the road) with the view obscured by the vegetation between the hides and the pools, and the shallows, where most of the birds were, on the far side of the pools, meaning you need a good birding scope to see anything. I have a long lens camera but didn't take a single photo because it wasn't worth it. Better to park here and go onto the amazing beach, which is gorgeous and quiet, miles from civilisation.

You’ve got to give little nature reserves like this five stars. Lots of off road parking, several bird hides to hide in and some small pools with tall reed like grasses to look for birds. I’m not a twitcher but I suppose you have to be at these places at the right time of year and the right time of day. There wasn’t much to see on the day and time I visited. Just a few mallards and a coot.

Beautiful beach, lovely and clean. Only downside was a lot of dog dirt along the car parking areas and walks onto the beach. Apart from that though, it's a gorgeous place

Beautiful beach for miles, lots of sand dunes, and a lovely walk to the pools, although some of the pools were closed off, we met some lovely smiling horses, ducks, geese, caterpilers, and butterflies, and found a bird hide, we turned back as the rain began to pour. 🐦☔❤️👪👪😎
