Explore a historic 70-acre reservoir with woodland walks, wildlife spotting, and water sports in the heart of Birmingham.

Edgbaston Reservoir is a 70-acre nature reserve and leisure destination located in Ladywood, less than two miles from Birmingham City Centre. Originally created between 1824 and 1829 by engineer Thomas Telford as a canal feeder reservoir, it has evolved into an important Site of Importance for Nature Conservation and a popular recreational hub. The reservoir is surrounded by woodland and grassland, providing excellent opportunities for families to explore nature and spot diverse wildlife including birds, newts, and bats. The peaceful setting makes it ideal for leisurely walks around the 2.5-kilometre shoreline, offering a natural escape within the urban environment. Beyond wildlife and walking, the reservoir is a hub for water-based activities and sports. Visitors can enjoy angling, sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, kayaking, and rowing. Three rowing clubs operate from the site, and Birmingham Canoe Club uses the facilities during summer months. The venue's rich history includes the famous 1873 tightrope walk by Charles Blondin, commemorated by a nearby statue. Edgbaston Reservoir is suitable for families of all ages, offering both active pursuits and relaxing nature experiences. With free entry and pushchair-friendly paths, it provides an accessible outdoor destination for families seeking outdoor recreation, wildlife observation, and a connection to Birmingham's industrial heritage.

Cool place for sunset 🌅 The problem is there are so many mosquitoes around there , when you walk they just don’t leave you alone . And probably this is because of the dirty and smelled water Wasn’t busy , a few people were there for sunset It would be more nice and clean

I have been coming here since I was a child and my children and now my grandson loves it here. The footpaths are nice and flat idea for walking and cycling. My grandson and I usually ride around it on our bikes with plenty of stops to lol at the wod birds and fish, boats etc. This place always amazes me with the differences at sunset and sunrise. It's a very popular and not too well known part of Brum that is a good place to take the kids for a few hours. You can't park in the carpark anymore due to antisocial behaviour just before the lockdown, so parking is via the local streets.
