Elie Chainwalk

Leven, United Kingdom•4.8(176)•Beaches, Nature Reserve

Scramble along Scotland's thrilling coastal chainwalk, combining climbing and clambering with stunning sea views and hidden coves.

The Elie Chainwalk is one of Scotland's best-kept coastal secrets, offering a unique adventure that goes beyond a traditional walk. This exhilarating 0.5km scramble combines climbing, crawling and clambering along a rugged volcanic coastline, with solidly planted steel chains and perfectly placed footholds providing security for those tackling this challenging route. The experience is unlike anything else found elsewhere in Britain, rewarding adventurers with exploration of hidden coves and caves along the way. The chainwalk requires agility, a good measure of climbing ability, and a strong head for heights, making it suitable for active older children (8+), teenagers and adults with reasonable fitness levels. Visitors should allow between one to two hours to complete the route comfortably, though timing is critical as the path becomes immersed at high tide. Participants must check tide times before visiting and should ideally set out no later than two hours before high tide. The route is not suitable for very young children, wheelchair users, pushchairs or dogs. Proper preparation is essential for a safe and enjoyable experience. Visitors should wear stout footwear with good gripping soles, pack waterproof jackets and warm clothing, and be prepared for changing weather conditions. Whether starting from the east or west end, the chainwalk delivers an unforgettable adventure combining nature, challenge and coastal beauty.

A fantastic and unique adventure! The Elie Chainwalk is exciting, well-organised, and offers stunning coastal views. Challenging enough to be fun, but suitable for beginners with the excellent guidance provided. A memorable experience that I'd highly recommend.

Absolutely brilliant. Visit at low tide only, not suitable for kids. Lots of scrambling over rocks, pretty high in places. The chains are stainless steel and well fixed. Good fun.

Loved it!! Kids loved it, 8 and 10 year old. It was also free!! You dont get many things for free these days. There was a couple of tricky chain walks but the kids just took their time and watched their footing. They probably found it easier than the adults.

Amazing walk, from the start to the end will keep the kids happy. The caravan park you go through at the start is a hidden Gem and looks phenomenal also. Be careful with little ones as could be dangerous but we loved today

What a fantastic walk and well worth doing. I did feel comfortable all the way along and would recommend it. As long as you've got experience in hiking and a bit of climbing. I do think the walk along the beach was a bit more intense then the chains them themselves. Make shore you check tide times. Would recommend you do it there and back as it was a little bit of a different experience. Stay safe and enjoy. Not many pictures of the chains as I'll let you experience them first hand.
