Eling Tide Mill Experience

Totton, United Kingdom•4.5(476)•Country Park, Heritage Site, Museum

Explore a Grade II* listed tide mill that's powered by nature and discover 900 years of milling history through interactive exhibitions and riverside walks.

The Eling Tide Mill Experience showcases a remarkable Grade II* listed tide mill dating from around 1785, where visitors can witness the fascinating mechanics of how tides harness power to turn water wheels and grind millstones into flour—a tradition spanning over 900 years in Eling. The venue combines heritage conservation with modern learning facilities, featuring an interactive discovery room that brings the mill's rich history to life. Families can enjoy a comprehensive experience across four main areas: the working tide mill itself (operational at low water), an extended visitor centre with interactive exhibitions, a brand new Mill Café serving refreshments, and scenic riverside walks along Eling Creek shoreline. The outdoor spaces include access to Goatee Beach and Bartley Water, perfect for nature lovers and those seeking peaceful waterside strolls. The venue is particularly suited to families with children of all ages, school groups, and heritage enthusiasts. All areas are dog-friendly and pushchair-accessible, making it welcoming for visitors with varying mobility needs. The Activity Room accommodates group visits including birthday parties and educational visits. Admission is affordable with family tickets starting at £19, and café visits plus riverside walks are completely free, making it an excellent value day out.

10 out of 10. I was in the area and was looking to stop for a picnic and spotted a sign for it. No idea about the area but it was lovely. Free parking with toilets nearby and a short walk across a bridge to a picnic and seating spot with lovely views. The mill was great and working with lovely reception and guide. Then across the road to a small museum ( with toilets) and cafe. Again great people who could not have been more helpful and friendly. A lovely experience that I recommend. Something for all ages.

We are now regular visitors to the cafe. Great service, tasty food and friendly staff. There is a young member of the team who always greets us and makes sure everything is perfect; we appreciate all of the staff. A nice, brief stroll from the free car park, across the toll bridge (free for pedestrians), brings you to the cafe which is also right next to the mill. A little gem of a spot. First class.

We had a lovely lunch here today. The food was very good, it was a really clean, comfortable, warm and lovely setting, but it was actually the service which stood out so much. Two really young guys cooking and serving and doing a fantastic job! So helpful, friendly, polite, respectful and nothing was too much trouble. A very very pleasant experience. Will be back with the rest of the family. Thanks guys, keep up the good work and great hospitality :-)

Nice day out. The Mill has undergone major renovation. Very interesting History, not just the mill but local area too. A 10 second walk across the road is the mills nicely priced cafe and an activity/history room all part of the same ticket. Lovely walk round the large mill pond and shore front. Local pubs on both sides of the water and church. Well worth the visit.
