Loved this ancient but still standing strong architectural beauty. We went on a sunny day and it looked so pretty in the pictures. Very close to city centre as well. A lovely start to our day trip to Colchester.

Impressive ruins of Norman architecture times. They are free to visit and wouldn’t take much time.

Today I visited St Botolph’s Priory, Colchester — and stood among stones that have been praying longer than most nations have existed. Founded around 1115, this was England’s first Augustinian priory. What remains now are ruins, but not silence. You can still sense the rhythm of monastic life here — prayer, labour, devotion — etched into the Roman brick and Norman stone. Walking through what’s left, I was struck by how fragile sacred spaces are, and yet how resilient their purpose is. Buildings can fall into ruin, but the intention behind them lingers. These places were never meant to be monuments only — they were meant to be kept, used, open. I don’t fully understand why I’m being drawn to these churches and priories, but the pull is real. A growing desire not just to visit them, but to protect them, preserve them, and keep them alive for prayer, reflection, and community. For now, I keep walking. And listening. ⛪🙏

An excellent work of art from Augustine history. I've been wanting to come to this place for quite some time, and it didn't disappoint. One of the many reasons why I love this town!

These imposing ruins were part of one of the first Augustinian priories in England. They've stood at the heart of the community since the 1100s and are a fine example of early Norman architecture. The church was built in flint and reused Roman brick. It showcases massive circular pillars, round arches and an elaborate west front. It was badly damaged by cannon fire during the Civil War siege of 1648 and was never repaired.
