Explore Stoke-on-Trent's industrial heritage at the world's only operational steam-powered potters' mill from 1857, featuring a working beam engine and guided tours.

Etruria Industrial Museum is home to Shirley's historic 1857 Bone and Flint Mill, the only operational steam-powered potters' mill in the world. Visitors can witness the mill in action, driven by a 1820s beam engine powered by a 1903 locally-built Cornish boiler, offering a unique glimpse into the region's rich industrial past. The museum is open most Fridays from 10:30am with admission at £6 for adults or £10 for guided tours (under 16s free with a paying adult). Special steaming weekends occur throughout the year, including stationary vintage engine rallies and classic vehicle rallies with free admission in support of Heritage Open Days. The museum also offers virtual 3D tours and factory tours for remote exploration. Managed by dedicated volunteers as a registered charity, Etruria Industrial Museum welcomes families and history enthusiasts of all ages to step into the history of Stoke-on-Trent. Brilliant, we went to the canal festival and my mobility scooter ran out of power, the staff in reception were brilliant and allowed me to recharge in there so I could get the scooter back to the car.

My first ever visit despite living locally. The staff were very welcoming, it was abundantly clear that they are passionate about the museum and its history, and the mill is 100% dependant on their commitment. As with so much in the local area it is important to maintain the link with our industrial heritage. Thank you to the volunteers.

Nice museum showing how bone china was made back In the heyday of pottery production. The steam engine works and is fired up on select days so try and catch it on one of those if you can. Friendly knowledgeable volunteer staff and a nice cafe

I think you need to be really interested in the subject to enjoy this museum. Nice little tea room with second hand books for sale. Canal lock nearby which is interesting. They have some activities for children too.
