Fairy Glen

Parbold, United Kingdom•4.5(887)•Country Park, Nature Reserve

Explore a scenic woodland valley with waterfalls, ancient broadleaved forest, and miles of scenic trails through a designated Biological Heritage Site.

Fairy Glen is a compact recreational facility nestled on the side of Parbold Hill above the rural village of Appley Bridge. The site follows Sprodley Brook, which has carved a picturesque valley through sandstone, creating small waterfalls and cliff faces interspersed within ancient broadleaved woodland. This natural landscape is designated as a Biological Heritage Site, home to mature oak, birch, ash, and alder trees with rich woodland biodiversity. Visitors can enjoy excellent surfaced pathways that wind through the glen, with seasonal displays of bluebells, wild garlic, ferns, and red campion covering the woodland floor. The site offers picnic and seated areas, making it ideal for families seeking a peaceful outdoor escape. A network of local public footpaths connects Fairy Glen to the wider countryside, allowing visitors to create circular routes of varying lengths. Located near Appley Bridge and accessible via train or bus, Fairy Glen is perfect for families and nature enthusiasts looking to explore woodland habitats and enjoy gentle walking. The site is dog-friendly and free to enter, though visitors are asked to stay on designated paths to preserve the delicate ecosystem and prevent damage from invasive species. No designated carpark is available, but the venue is within walking distance of Appley Lane N and Appley Bridge Train Station.

Fairy Glen is absolutely stunning. A beautiful hidden spot with amazing scenery, waterfalls and peaceful walking paths. It feels really magical and well worth the visit. Perfect for a relaxed walk and taking in the views. Definitely one of the nicest places we’ve been and would highly recommend.

Beautiful woodland walk around a shallow stream with hobbit style bridges and little waterfalls. There's a couple of benches to take a rest on but not advisable for either wheelchairs or people with mobility issues as there are several sets of steps and the ground can become quite boggy. We walked the dog and it's best on a weekday and in term time.

I visited the area with family a few weekends ago with the plan of a nice family walk and talk get-together. This is a lovely walk. Not suitable for tots or buggies. I normally prefer a loop walk but this was lovely. There is plenty of shade and cover from the elements of needed to keep you cool and dry. A few post fences to step over, includes forest, open fields and river sections with a turning point in a quaint spot for some refreshments and a comfort break. Whole walk takes about 2 hours at a steady comfortable pace.

Mega place for young kids, parking is limited and it's a shame it's stamped as a purely locals area, get it but, it's so so good for kids, lots of glitter in tree trunks, coins bashed in trees, at least one fairy door if you look hard enough(very tempted to discreetly add a couple more). Go with respect and leave no trace and this is a pleasant walk with a babbling stream and a few waterfalls. Lots or really nice interactions with other walkers, yake some wellies for kids and let them be a little mucky and wet it's well worth it
