Gorgeous easy walk to do. We went on the train and was not far from the station and also popped into Romsey centre for a coffee and wonder. Easy to do with kids and saw lots of different wildlife and plants, even found a little park along the canal to break up the walk.

Lovely Wetlands Habitat, just outside Romsey in Hampshire. Sensitively managed by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust - to benefit Wildlife and people. Great views, esp birds. Gravel paths and wooden viewing stations. Free small car parking area. No loo. No cafe (but Romsey is 5 mins away). Just nature and calm vibes.

I came across this place by following a walk guide in my Waterside Walks book which led me to start by the Plaza Theatre in Romsey and ending up at the Nature Reserve. A very pleasant reasonably short walk alongside the canal by the Railway museum first. Plenty of wild flowers, Ducks, Robins and scenery along the way. A good afternoon stroll.

Fishlake Meadows Nature Reserve is a lovely place for walks and birdwatching. It can be muddy after much rain, but on the sunny day we went there, the footpaths were dry. We were a group of birders and saw dozens of different species.

Definitely a place to return to. Amazing to walk from the almost hidden car park round the back of the housing estate to the screens overlooking the lake and be surrounded by common darters, southern hawkers, azure damsels, large egrets, swans, peacocks, red admirals and perhaps a few others that preferred not to be photographed. Many dogs and dog walkers, also many blackberries! It is worth knowing to bring wellies as a few of the paths are still 20240809 a bit soggy. The screens have no seats just so you know so if you were expecting to sit and chill watching birds, you'll need to bring your own. Likewise, whilst the screens have done lovely bird id sheets on then the wood is a bit flimsy so take care when leaning out to take photographs. No bins, so take litter home!
