Explore an ancient woodland gorge with dramatic waterfalls, riverside walks and abundant wildlife including otters, bats and rare bryophytes.

Golitha Falls National Nature Reserve is an upland oak and mixed ash woodland reserve spanning 18 hectares, centred around a long gorge carved by the River Fowey. The site is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, making it one of Cornwall's most ecologically significant natural spaces. Visitors can enjoy accessible walking paths including a flat 0.6km out-and-back route to the falls viewing area, with steeper trails available for more adventurous explorers. The reserve is particularly rich in biodiversity, featuring over 120 bryophyte species, 48 lichen species including the nationally rare Parmelia minarum, and an impressive array of woodland wildflowers. Spring visitors will encounter carpets of bluebells and wood anemones across the forest floor. The reserve is home to diverse wildlife including dormice in ancient hazel coppice, three bat species (noctule, brown long-eared and lesser horseshoe), otters along the River Fowey, and healthy populations of salmon and sea trout. Birdwatchers and insect enthusiasts will appreciate the 83 moth species and diverse butterfly populations including silver-washed fritillaries and meadow browns. The site is open all hours and free to visit, making it ideal for families. Ancient woodland elements, including Draynes Wood mentioned in the Domesday Book, add historical interest. Winter storms create particularly spectacular falls, though extra care is advised after heavy rainfall.

So what to say. Nice falls at the viewing point and down by the river. Push further on past the main falls, this is for the adventurous as the path is very rough and can be dangerous. We found the best wild swimming pools absolutely stunning but not for the faint hearted. Walking boots a must, safety first at all times.

We visited Golitha Falls expecting a more dramatic waterfall, but even though it wasn't quite what we had imagined, we still had a fantastic time. The walk itself is absolutely beautiful, with peaceful woodland, crystal-clear water, and plenty of stunning scenery along the way. It's the perfect place to slow down, enjoy nature, and take in the surroundings. We'd happily visit again for the tranquil atmosphere and picturesque views. Definitely worth a visit if you enjoy scenic walks and the great outdoors.

Lovely woodland walk with bird song and running water along its length. Can be tricky in some places. Trainers or walking boots would be best, flip flops not ideal. Did see many people using walking sticks , not suitable for wheelchair users, but did see young families pushing buggies

Great and picturesque walk that felt like we had stepped into a fairytale like film. Lovely walk along the river, a dip and play in the water and a great picnic at the waterside. This is about a half a day trip but absolutely worth it. Free parking and free to walk around with great memories created, I definitely recommend this place.

Very beautiful place to go for a walk. Wear a walking shoes. Shady & full of trees so pleasant on hot afternoons in summer. Free car park. There is WC in car park and place to eat which closes at 4pm. Attached photos to have an idea of the waterfall.
