Granville Country Park

Telford, United Kingdom•4.4(226)•Country Park, Heritage Site, Nature Reserve

Explore 85.5 hectares of reclaimed industrial landscape where nature thrives among historic mining relics, woodland trails, and wildlife-rich grasslands.

Granville Country Park is one of Telford's largest and most wildlife-rich green spaces, spanning 85.5 hectares across a site that has transformed from industrial heritage into a thriving natural sanctuary. Originally declared a Local Nature Reserve in 1989, the park showcases a remarkable story of renewal where centuries of mining activity have given way to flourishing woodlands, meadows, marshes, and open water habitats. Visitors can discover remnants of Granville's industrial past, including the tub boat canal, blast furnaces, and the old winding house from the last deep mine in the county. These historic structures now stand surrounded by nature, creating a unique blend of industrial archaeology and natural beauty. The site features diverse wildlife including abundant bird species and flower-rich grasslands, with pit mounds of former waste transformed into vibrant heath and grassland ecosystems. The park offers accessible footpaths suitable for families and visitors of all abilities, with mostly easy walking routes and some steeper pit mounds that can be avoided. It's particularly appealing for families seeking outdoor recreation combined with educational opportunities about industrial history and ecological restoration. The site pioneered an innovative approach to urban development in Telford New Town, integrating green networks with residential areas—an achievement that gained international recognition. Free parking is available off Granville Road, and the site welcomes visitors year-round. Water safety information is provided for the open water features throughout the reserve.

Great place for walking dogs and trekking on the bikes with respect to the walkers and dog walkers. Can be quite muddy in places but my son loved that. We didn't get to see all as we ran out of time. So will probably re visit at some point.

Lovely bit of country side in the edge of a large town , Retaining much of it's past in both relics of mining era with some preserved parts of buildings and a canal wharf. Well worth a visit if you are in the area. Some good signage telling you the stories of the past , all for free with a good car park. I have to say well done to the volunteers. Only down side, as in so many places I found all the bins overflowing onto the ground.

Nice place to walk, with it without a dog. Nice trails through the woods and old mining buildings to see. Beware in the road coming off the island though, do not go 40-50mph as there are invisible speed bumps with no markings!! I could barely see them in broad daylight and my eyesight is perfect!
