Visited today, mine & my husbands second visit. Today's visit was a birthday treat for my brother & his wife 🥰 It was a fantastic place to visit. Love all the cars & we were really excited to see the Landrover from the TV series Vera. Its not really encouraged to open the doors of the vehicles so I was admiring it from the outside & a very nice gentleman who worked there let me sit inside in the drivers seat, completely made my day 🥰🤗
What an absolute gem of an attraction the Great British Car Journey is! Nestled in Ambergate, Belper, this museum is a masterclass in automotive nostalgia, beautifully chronicling the incredible rise, golden eras, and social history of the British motoring industry. The sheer variety of vehicles on display is staggering. The exhibition takes you on a brilliant chronological journey, starting right from the trailblazing days of the tiny Austin Sevens that first put the British public on the roads. It is an absolute joy to wander through the decades, moving from everyday family classics to high-performance legends. Seeing an immaculate Escort RS2000 standing proud alongside the ultimate in British luxury—a majestic Rolls Royce—highlights just how diverse our engineering heritage really is. From the quirky, clever packaging of the Mini Clubmans to the beloved icons that used to fill every British driveway, there is something here to trigger a memory for every single visitor. The interactive audio-visual guides are fantastic, adding great depth and storytelling to the impeccably presented collection. Whether you are a hardcore petrolhead or just looking for a wonderful, nostalgic afternoon out in Derbyshire, this place is highly recommended!
Very well presented collection of vehicles charting the history of the British automotive industry from its beginnings to the present day. The collection comprises over 150 cars, laid out in largely chronological order. Popular models that many will remember sit alongside some very rare and exclusive cars, including a couple of celebrity vehicles. Many of the cars are accompanied by information panels explaining their history, while a handheld interactive guide is included in the ticket price. It's an innovative idea whereby you scan a code by a car you're interest in, and can see more details the device, with some cars also featuring a short commentary. Drive Dad's Car adds a unique element to the Great British Car Journey, as you can choose to drive many of the vehicles in the collection. The driving experiences represent pretty good value, especially with package deals available. You get a decent amount of driving time, and the instructors seemed very laid back and allowed us to enjoy the cars in the confines of the industrial estate. They were happy to answer any questions we had about the cars. The site is well managed, with free parking, a nicely stocked gift shop and a café offering good value refreshments and cooked lunches, with quick service. All the staff members were friendly and helpful. At the time of my visit, museum tickets were £18 for adults and £40 for families, which felt like decent value considering the standard of presentation and the variety of cars on display. An ideal wet day attraction but worth visiting whatever the weather if you're interested in classic cars and British automotive history.
Fantastic motor museum, much larger than expected, a true walk through the British motor industry. All vehicles are well presented, with detailed descriptions and an audio guide, which gives plenty of historical information. You will find also some film stars here - from "Back to the future" and "Vera" - yes, the original Land Rover customised for Brenda Blethyn. The whole museum is on one level, fully accessible, with a great large coffee and gift shop and huge parking. They also offer vintage cars for hire - for a short leisure drive or an event.
What a great place tucked away at the side of the A38 in Derbyshire. Really easy to find. Inside you get headphones and screen to take round with you. Each section is numbered and give you a full description of the era you are in. Then whilst in each section, lots of cars have a QR code which you scan with the screen and it gives you the background to that particular car. The smell in there should be bottled for car enthusiasts, just perfect. Theres about 150 cars in therewith you can get up close to, not out of reach like museum pieces are. A wide range of cars, and quite a few I had never seen or heard of before. Toilets available inside and a nice cafe that does good food is a bonus. Then when you come out, at the end of the carpark is where tou can pay to drive the old cars. So we spent some time just watching people drive the cars of their choice and listening to the sounds as well as looking at the joy on their faces. Just a fabulous place to spend half a day. We'll worth putting on your "to do" list.
