Explore a scenic reservoir valley with peaceful countryside walks, historic sites, and beautiful views across Greater Manchester.

Greenbooth Reservoir is a picturesque natural destination located north of Heywood in Rochdale, Greater Manchester. The reservoir and surrounding Naden Valley comprise four interconnected reservoirs set in a quiet area ideal for country walks and outdoor exploration. Visitors can enjoy distant views towards Manchester and spot wind turbines from Scout Moor Wind Farm along the surrounding paths. The site holds fascinating historical significance as it marks the location of the former village of Greenbooth, which was abandoned and submerged when the reservoir was constructed between 1958 and 1961. A commemorative plaque on the dam wall serves as a poignant reminder of this lost village. The landscape offers scenic beauty with opportunities for walking, photography, and peaceful reflection. Greenbooth Reservoir is suitable for families seeking outdoor activities, dog walkers, and nature enthusiasts. The free entry and dog-friendly policy make it an accessible destination for all visitors. The area provides a tranquil escape from urban environments while offering historical intrigue and natural beauty.

Beautiful spot for walking. We've never had an issue parking and it's never too crowded. Nice and flexible as there are shorter or longer loops you can do. Suitable terrain for beginners with a few reasonable gradients, although probably not accessible for wheelchairs unfortunately. Highly recommended.

Nice walk! Can get very muddy and slippy, and there are a few sets of stairs

Beautiful place, didn't realize though quite hilly and rocky. Not good if you have mobility issues. Luckily I had a friend to support me. The dog loved it.

Interesting drive up to the carpark, certainly needed to make use of the passing places! View from the start of the walk really impressive, can see the bigger reservoirs and lovely view of the wind turbines above on the hills. Takes a very gentle 2 hours or so to walk the circuit some steep steps through the wooded area to the south west but nothing too difficult. Worth the effort
