Within the wider grounds of the National Trust's Hardwick Hall stand the atmospheric ruins of the Old Hall, occupying the site of Bess of Hardwick's birthplace. These ruins date back over 400 years, with a significant amount of the building still standing, and sections of fine decorative plasterwork surviving on the internal walls. The Old Hall remained in use alongside the New Hall for some time, before becoming derelict and being partially dismantled by the 4th Duke of Devonshire, who wished for it to become a romantic ruin to beautify the estate grounds. Today, it can be visited as part of Hardwick Hall's wider estate, with tickets charged at £6 at the time of our visit in June 2026 (a heavily discounted price for those not wishing to visit the New Hall and formal gardens). It would be a standout feature of the estate, but when we visited, the ruins were closed, preventing access to the information boards within. Unfortunately this did detract a little from the experience, particularly considering another similar property nearby is fully open and free to visit.

Coupling this with a visit to the new Hall, what a treat. Currently, this is an English Heritage building BUT you will soon be able to see more of the Old Hall, as the NT are now involved.

Everything was so interesting — both the castle itself and its history. I was amazed by the number of tapestries in the rooms; everything looked so harmonious and had its own mystical charm. There are many paths where you can take a walk and simply enjoy nature and the peaceful solitude.

We've been to Hardwick Hall many times, but this was the first time we've been able to go around the ruins of the Old Hall. The building is owned by English Heritage but operated by National Trust, so NT members don't need to pay to go in. A really fascinating early Tudor building, and the remains of the plasterwork are just amazing . It us also huge,,and it was a delight to climb to the upper stories. Well worth a visit.

Hardwick Hall ruins, English Heritage Not suitable for disabled people as lots of steep steps and no handrail. Lovely old ruin. It's a ruin that you can imagine how it was. I personally love ruins, so it was my cup of tea! Interesting markings on walls as you climb the stairs. Great for history buffs to visit. Lovely for pictures. It was part of the entry fee to the maim house too. Payment separate would be expensive . There are no toilets at this location, but they are close to visitors' tea rooms / shop.
