Helsby Quarry Local Nature Reserve is a Green Flag Award-winning destination offering year-round natural beauty and outdoor exploration. This former 19th-century quarry and landfill site has been beautifully reclaimed and designated as a Local Nature Reserve since 2001, combining recreational opportunities with significant geological and wildlife interest. Visitors can discover a variety of landscapes including dramatic sandstone rock faces formed 240 million years ago, a historic rock tunnel that once transported quarry stone to Ince Pier (with stone believed to feature in Liverpool's Albert Docks), woodland areas, and wildflower meadows. The site comes alive seasonally with carpets of bluebells and primroses in spring, lush greenery in summer, and striking rock formations visible in autumn and winter. The meadow attracts numerous dog walkers and wildlife enthusiasts who can spot finches, including the striking goldfinch. The reserve is suitable for families of all ages with well-maintained surfaced main paths, numerous steps and level changes, and wheelchair-accessible routes along the north-eastern loop. A carved bench provides a pleasant rest spot along the south meadow. The site also connects to Helsby Hill, managed by the National Trust, offering a ten-minute uphill walk with stunning views of the Welsh Mountains. While adding to my short walk through Harmers Wood and Helsby Hill I found myself at Helsby Quarry. It is a lovely place to walk around, but it has a serious Silent Hill 2 vibe going (if you know, you know). I was taking pictures and narrating in real time to my friends on a group chat. I'll try and replecate the experience on the photograph captions.

A pleasant walking area with 2 to 3 short circuits. Not very long walks, though. A small woodland copse is how I would describe it. 3 stars reflects fact we were after something bigger and with more varied walks.

Lovely little walk. Good if you have prams or wheelchairs. Plenty of little rest stops, with benches to sit and enjoy this small woodland. There are some parts that have steps on the trail but you can find other ways to avoid the steps. A short walk but beautiful.

We only spent half an hour here on a Wednesday 4.30pm so probably didn't explore enough to appreciate it properly. It was pleasant enough for a short walk. When we left at 5pm the car park was busy and there were quite a few people arriving.
