We booked our visit to Helston Railway at the last minute, and we're so glad we did. It turned out to be one of the unexpected highlights of our holiday. Whether you're interested in railways, the history of this area of Cornwall, or simply fancy a gentle ride on a restored heritage train, this is well worth a visit. The café and gift shop are housed in old railway carriages, which adds to the experience and immediately gives you a sense of stepping back in time. The staff all wear traditional railway uniforms, which is a lovely touch, and every one of them was friendly, welcoming and incredibly knowledgeable about both the trains and the history of the line they are gradually restoring. The train journey itself lasts around 15 minutes each way, with a short stop at the end of the line before returning. Travelling in the traditional carriages was great fun, and the route offers some lovely views of the Cornish countryside. While the ride isn't particularly long, it's all about enjoying the experience and appreciating a piece of living railway history. Perhaps the thing that impressed me most was the passion of everyone involved. It's clear that every ticket sold helps preserve this wonderful piece of Cornish heritage and supports the ongoing restoration of the railway. Knowing that your visit is helping keep this project going makes it even more worthwhile.

Good to be contributing to a preserved railway run entirely by volunteers. Gentle ride through the countryside with a stop and look around at the halt before returning. Buffet cafe selling hot drinks, snacks and baguettes. Book shop and museum. Would recommend if you have a couple of hours spare. Look up to see opening times beforehand.

Very good even though it 🌧 on our vist. Signed up as members got 10% off in shop. Nice trip, has shop and cafe. You go through the farm to get to the parking, not open every day..check before you go.

This is an absolute must for railway fans . Lovely to see all the train buffs who are all dressed in there lovely old outfits . Love the tickets abd the guard who punches a little hole in them . Took me back to my childhood in the lovely old carriages. The train doesn't go very far but that didn't matter I felt a al little while I was back in a world where people were kind abd helpful to one another. Really loved the fact that lots of mums took their toddlers along for the experience. I recomend the hot chocolate from the buffet car . The two exhibits in sheds were missed by many on the train . Dont they are fascinating bit of our history here in cornwall . Well done everyone working to take care of our local history .

We visited the developing Helston Railway recently, and honestly, it’s one of the most charming experiences in Cornwall. Yes, it’s still a work in progress, but that’s part of the magic – you can feel the passion and dedication of the volunteers with every step you take. The current ride is lovely, but what really excites me is their ambitious vision to push the line all the way back into Helston town. That will be a game-changer for local tourism and heritage. You can already see the foundations being laid, and I can’t wait to come back and ride the full route. Now, let’s talk about the cafe in the carriage. Great selection of drinks, the cakes are homemade and generous. Also don’t skip the bookshop either – it’s packed with second-hand railway books, local history gems, and children’s stories. I came away with three books and a smile. Support this railway – they deserve it. Five stars for ambition, atmosphere, and those scones!
