A unique Abbey, with a unique history. One of the only UK churches with a surviving 700 year old stairway to the connected monastery. Rare medieval paintings throughout including 5 dances of death panels. Roman tombstones and other treasures. Fascinating throughout, be sure to ask a guide for a commentary. The small crypt dates from 674, and can be viewed for a small fee- contains a unique stone engraving
Hexham Abbey was smaller than I expected, but it still carries enough history to hold its own. The greeting at the door was warm and set the right tone, though most of the other volunteers seemed more invested in their conversations with each other than in the building or its visitors. Signage was limited — helpful where it existed, but you’re largely left to orient yourself. Founded around AD 674 by St Wilfrid, using stone taken from nearby Roman sites, the Abbey is one of the earliest Christian foundations in the north. The current structure is mostly 12th–13th‑century Gothic, rebuilt after centuries of raids and fires. We didn’t go into the Anglo‑Saxon crypt, but even without it, the building gives a clear sense of its long, layered past. Smaller, quieter, and a bit lighter on interpretation than ideal — but still historically rich, approachable, and worth a visit if you like your heritage without theatrics.
Admirable effort to protect the Abbey’s historically significant heritage while also being an active center of worship in the community. Volunteer staff are noteworthy in their kindness and dedication towards helping visitors.
Such a beautiful, serene place in the heart of Hexham. We visited for the history and a quiet moment. The stained glass is breathtaking, and the grounds are lovely for a stroll. Make sure to visit the Refectory café afterward—the food is great and the staff are very welcoming. A real gem of the North East.
Lovely place to look at. Unfortunately we arrived late in the day so only got to enjoy the exterior of the building. They were ringing the bells which was nice. Next to the abbey is a park and the railings of the park are covered in knitted/crocheted poppies which was beautiful to see. Well done to those who made the poppies.
