Orpington, United Kingdom•4.6(1.6k)•Country Park, Nature Reserve

Explore 250 acres of woodland, meadows and formal gardens with a nature centre, café and family-friendly trails just 15 miles from London.

High Elms Country Park offers visitors a sprawling 250-acre estate of countryside combining woodlands, chalk meadows, formal gardens and wildflower meadows. Located on the ridge of the North Downs, this historic site was originally the country home of the Lubbock family and now welcomes families seeking outdoor exploration and nature experiences. The park features extensive walking trails including a dedicated Nature Trail with leaflets and an Audio Trail aimed at 11-16 year-olds, making it engaging for different age groups. All-terrain wheelchairs called Trampers are available for visitors with accessibility needs. The site is home to BEECHE (Bromley Environmental Education Centre at High Elms), a sustainable visitor centre offering educational programmes, and the Green Roof Cafe provides refreshment throughout the day. Designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and Local Nature Reserve, High Elms supports rare wildlife species and diverse habitats managed by the Bromley Ranger Service. The combination of natural heritage, educational facilities, and accessible amenities makes it ideal for families wanting to enjoy nature, learn about local conservation, and spend time outdoors. Free entry and comprehensive facilities including car parks and public toilets ensure a convenient visit for all ages from birth onwards.

Really great place to walk in the shady woods and explore. The cafe was good, with nice servers and food. It can get pretty busy, and on a sunny day, most people can be found picnicking on the lawns. A fantastic piece of history left for public use.

Large grounds , mixed woodlands and remains of stairs that once led from a manor house to levels of lawns. Peaceful mid week . Cafe next to small pond.

Visited on a sunny day, and this place felt like an absolute hidden gem. I honestly can’t believe I didn’t know about it earlier. It’s a beautiful park with plenty of space for long walks, and it’s also perfect if you’re bringing dogs along. One of the highlights is the wonderfully preserved gardens in the middle, which feel especially peaceful, and the area near the golf course adds to the open, scenic feel. Even the drive to get there is part of the experience. It genuinely feels like you’re heading somewhere in Wales rather than staying anywhere near London. A really refreshing escape and a place I’ll definitely be coming back to.
